This blog has two major topics, play and parenting. I focus the blog on these topics, because that is what childhood and motherhood are all about.
Play:
Play is everything when it comes to kids. It’s how they figure out the world around them, learn every skill from letters and numbers, to emotional regulation and social skills. It is the most important part of childhood. So, you will see lots of different types of play activities on the blog.
Honestly, most of the playful activities I do cost very little, and use supplies I already have around the house. Sometimes I’ll get a wild hair and make something big and involved, but mostly I don’t have the time for that. I prefer simple, easy activities. My hope is that you can take the activities from this blog and easily do them with your own children.
Parenting:
In my previous life as a Children’s Therapist, I had to teach a lot of parenting skills and work very closely with the parents of my clients. So, I have lots of tools in my parenting toolbox. I write about some of those here and there, but I really like to share with you my own experiences.
I want to be authentic with you about my parenting experiences. A lot of time bloggers look so perfect to their readers, but really, behind those computer screens are normal every day moms who are trying their hardest, having hard days, trudging through the life as a mom, just like you. I want you to know that I am real, so I try to be real with you.
In terms of parenting styles, I’m more of a hybrid parent. I have read a lot of books, blogs, and have taken lots of classes on parenting styles (even before I had kids), and I take a bit from each and kinda do my own thing. I do believe a lot in the positive parenting style, but I don’t follow it perfectly. Even though I’ve learned a lot, I still make plenty of mistakes!
My favorite parenting posts are the Taking Care of You posts, because as caregivers, we need some care too. Plus, we are kinder and more thoughtful when we feel good about ourselves.
Overall, I hope that this blog can be a safe and happy place for you to come and get inspired, get some good tips, and feel supported.
Oh, and if you’re wondering where the name “Dirt and Boogers” came from. It all started with this picture.
Sometimes boys are full of dirt and boogers 🙂
As always, email me (amanda@messymotherhood.com) if you have any questions. I’m a busy mom too, but I’ll get back to you as soon as I can!
