Sorting Colors at 18 months

Last week I let J play with three dry erase markers and his dry erase board.  He colored for a bit and then he spent the rest of his time taking the lids on and off the markers.  I noticed that he was able to correctly match the colored lids to the correct color of marker.  HA!  He’s color sorting…now we can start doing other sorting games.

The next day I presented J with this.

He was able to correctly sort the pieces, then…

…it shortly turned into a free for all of exploring the cups and all the pieces.  And why wouldn’t it?  It’s a perfectly age appropriate thing to do.  This age is constantly trying to figure out how things work and how they can interact and manipulate the objects in their world.

Great activity! My girls both still love to sort. It is neat to see how it progresses. Keeley (at 4.5) is starting to make sure she sorts by color, shapes, and then makes patterns. Love watching it change as they learn more about how their world works…

My 22 month old loves sorting as well- colours especially! About a month ago I found he had put 3 blue blocks on the blue horse page of his “Brown bear brown bear” book completely unprompted while I was in the kitchen.

Seems like such a montessori kiddy type thing to do. At a similar age I gave him balls and blocks and he enjoyed sorting them too!

What are these pieces made from? Are they foam? It is hard to tell from the picture. They are a great size though!

What a great activity! i love the shapes you have to work with, too. I bet he learns more than you know from an activity like this. Thanks for sharing on Monday Madness!

Simple and easy way to learn. Sorting is something I find I like to do with all their toys. Sometimes I feel like I am a segregator in that way. When we play legos I have to sort them out into piles of colors before I can begin building. Thanks for sharing on Monday Madness!
