Painting with Baby

Affiliate

This week, Zero to Two:: A Book of Play, launched.  So, I thought I’d share some of my favorite baby play activities to celebrate it’s release.

Earlier this week, Baby E was all over his older brother’s painting, and wanted to paint so bad.  So, I decided to set him up with his own painting activity.

Exploring paint with babies

The invitation was really simple:

I rolled out a big sheet of white paper and added a few circles of washable paint.   That’s it…super easy.

I put E in only his diaper and let him explore the paint.

Explore he did!

This isn’t  just “artwork” for baby, but more of a sensory experience.

He stopped frequently to look at the paint on his hands and feet.

He felt the cool, wet, squishy feeling of the paint.  Saw the bright colors and how it spread across the paper.

He seemed to have a good time with it.  He didn’t really laugh or even smile, but he was really focused and paid attention to all the sensations the activity provided.

Sure, it was a bit messy.  I did allow him to crawl off the paper some.  It was floor mopping day anyway, so I didn’t mind a bit of washable paint on the floor.

Because the paint is washable, washing it off his body was really easy too.

This was a really great activity for him, and something I think I’ll do again.

I love the idea of just putting a big piece of white paper on the floor and adding different colors to it. I also like the idea of using edible paint (http://www.fantasticfunandlearning.com/fall-leaf-painting-with-edible-paint.html) for an added sensory experience. (This, plus my little one still tastes all of our projects.) This is definitely one that I look forward to trying. Thanks for sharing.

Hi, I just came across your blog and wanted to know how old your baby is? I’d love to do this with mine but he puts everything into his mouth. Just wanted to know how you handled things like that. Thanks 🙂

My son is 12 months old. I worried a bit out him putting it in his mouth, but I was there to supervise, and amazingly enough he never once tried tasting it.

Babies and painting really is a fun experience. Your tip about doing messy activities on a day you are going to clean anyway is a great one! We try to do some messy experiences indoors, but often I try to plan those for outdoor time to ease our indoor clean-up. How fun for your little one to explore! I will have to try this one when my twins are crawling.
