When “Look Me In the Eye” Doesn’t Work

Look me in the eye

The other day my husband was telling me about how he tried to talk to our 4 year old about something important but he couldn’t get him to look him in the eye.  He said that it quickly turned into a power struggle about the eye contact instead of the behavior my husband was trying to correct.

So I asked him, “Why does he need to look you in the eye?”

His response, “I want him to listen to me, I want him to think about what he did.”

And that got me thinking…

Is it really important that kids look their parents in the eye?
