How We Play Friday: Shopping Pretend Play

J’s been really into pretend play lately and has been pretty much ignoring all my lovely invitations to play.

I was a bit hurt at first and, as a blogger, I was a little lost about what to post since he’s not interested in doing anything I suggest.  But then, I decided that I’d give you a glimpse of how J and I play together…without all the prompts.

I hope that these posts can show you a bit about how I allow J to lead the play and how we speak to each other during our playtime.

So, here’s how we play!

How We Play Shopping Trip

Today’s play was all set around his want to go shopping.  It quickly turned into something completely different and we made some pretty cool things along the way.

It started off with J asking me to sit at the kitchen counter and to hold our play money while he wanted to go shopping.

He grabbed his shopping cart and proceeded to fill it up with a ton of toys.  Once his cart was full, he pulled it up to the counter, paid his money, and then I put them all in a plastic bag so he can take them home.

That’s when he looked at me with a confused look on his face…

“Um, Mommy, I need a car.  How can I go home with my groceries without a car?”

“Well J, how do you think we can fix that?”

“Well…we need to make a car”.

“Ok, how can we make a car?”

He looks around the house and grabs his little bench.  “Hey Mom, this can be my car”

“Sounds great, J.”

“Well Mommy…it doesn’t have wheels”

“Oh, well what should we do about that?”

“Let’s get some wheels!”

“Hum…wheels, wheels, wheels.” looking around the room.

He looks around and grabs his plastic plates and places them next to the bench and added another one for a steering wheel.  He asked for help to add a bit of tape to keep the wheels up.  In the end, this is what he came up with.

Child Led-Pretend Play: Shopping Trip

After he pretended to drive home, he again looked at me and said “Um Mommy, I need a house”.

“Well, J, what are we going to do about THAT?”

“Well, I can’t make one.  Can you make one for me?”

My mind starts going into create mode and I realize that yes, I can make him a house.  I ask J to grab the masking tape and that I’ll be right back.  I run to the garage.

I return with 5 large pieces of cardboard leftover from our recent move.

I tape them together and make a house for J.

And that’s where he stayed…
