Baby E has been “army crawling” for a while now and loves scooting around all over the place. He really seems to enjoy finding new things to explore and experience.
I am a big proponent of sensory play and I believe in starting with sensory experiences as early as possible.
So, I combined his crawling and sensory play into a sensory road of sorts. I thought about objects around the house with different textures and laid them out down our hallway. I added a few fun balls to keep him engaged and to add to the sensory experience.
I laid down a bamboo beach mat, brown craft paper, and a fuzzy brown blanket. I added a musical egg shaker, a ball of masking tape (because it’s sticky), a red ball, and a yellow foam ball. Every piece either has an interesting texture or sound.
I laid him down on one end of the road and I went to the other. I left him to explore on his own and he immediately went to it.
He spent time on each different texture and crawled back and forth across our sensory road.
He hit the brown paper several times as it made interesting sounds.
He dug his hands into the fuzzy blanket and rolled around in it for a long while.
The balls were fun for him and he seemed to enjoy the sticky masking tape ball that I made for him. He actually played with each ball, but spent most of his time with this one and his egg shaker.
Overall this was a great sensory experience that allowed for Baby E to explore all sorts of sounds, textures, sights, and tastes.
It was super simple to set up and clean. I love activities like this that I just throw together and end up being wonderful!
Come on over to Instagram and Facebook to see how else we play!
I wish I knew about cool stuff like this when my little one was a baby!
Sensory play is so valuable for little ones and this looks such fun.
I love this! I want to make the sticky ball for my little one, but what kind of tape do you use? Is it non-toxic?
My little is so close to crawling, I can’t wait to set up a sensory walk for him!
Hi Megan,
I just wound up a bunch of masking tape and left the sticky side out. It was really simple. Hope your guy loves his sensory crawl!
Knew you had to be a therapist! “Sensational” idea for all babies!
